2026 Saga Dawa – Fivefold Sacred Celebration

Introduction to the Saga Dawa Fivefold Sacred Celebration
The fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, known as Saga Dawa, is regarded as the most sacred month associated with Shakyamuni Buddha and is especially revered in Tibetan Buddhism as the “Month of Shakyamuni Buddha.”
Within this month are several important commemorative days connected to the life of the Buddha, collectively known as the “Fivefold Sacred Celebration” or the “Five Auspicious Days.”
The Five Sacred Days of Saga Dawa
1. Eighth Day — The Auspicious Birth of the Buddha
Commemorating the birth of the Buddha in Lumbini Garden.
2. Fifteenth Day — Buddha Enlightenment & Parinirvana Day
The most important day of Saga Dawa.
According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, on the fifteenth day of the fourth lunar month, the Buddha:
- Attained complete enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree
- Later demonstrated Parinirvana on this same day
Therefore, this day embodies the extraordinary blessings of the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana simultaneously. It is said that all virtuous and non-virtuous actions performed on this day multiply countless times.
3. Eighteenth Day — Buddha Mother Merit Day
Commemorating the kindness and virtues of Queen Maya, the Buddha’s mother.
4. Twenty-Second Day — Turning the Wheel of Dharma Day
Commemorating the Buddha’s first turning of the Dharma Wheel.
After attaining enlightenment, the Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths to the five ascetics at Deer Park, thereby opening the path of liberation for beings throughout the world.
5. Twenty-Ninth / Thirtieth Day — Completion of the Buddha’s Miraculous Deeds
(Observed differently according to regional calendars)
Commemorating the Buddha’s miraculous displays to subdue negative forces and benefit sentient beings.
Its profound meaning includes:
- The inconceivable wisdom of the Buddha
- The importance of faith and pure devotion
- Benefiting beings through compassion and wisdom
The Overall Significance of the Fivefold Sacred Celebration
In Tibetan Buddhism, the month of Saga Dawa is regarded as a time when:
“the merit and virtue of all wholesome actions increase vastly.”
